Recently a friend of mine shook his head sadly as he described how his co-worker had responded to the task of explaining his report to the department staff.

“Todd’s hands were sweating and he felt like he was going to faint. He had no idea why his manager wanted him to do this week’s sales presentation. “

Does this sound familiar? Almost everyone can relate to Todd, it underscores the number one fear that most business people share:

Public speaking.

Why is that? The reasons range from simply not wanting to stand in front of a group to being afraid of what people will say about them.  Let’s face it, no one likes being rejected.

All of the reasons are valid and these would be okay if we did away with presentations altogether. Since this is not likely to happen, the next best thing is to make it as enjoyable an experience as possible.

Have you noticed how the best public speakers wow their audiences by making it easy to identify with them? Don’t kid yourself; these speakers have experienced the same feelings at one time.  But they have learned how to turn their anxiety into an asset that puts power in their story. And it is their story that is the center of attention.
